The Maritime Alps Nature Park is among the most extensive protected areas of Italy. There are numerous peaks over 3,000 meters, lakes, prairies and small glaciers. The abundance of alpine fauna and botanical species constitute a unique environmental heritage. The protected area develops around the Marguareis Massif, the most south-western portion of the Maritime Alps, and includes two valleys: Valle Pesio and a portion of the Alta Valle Tanaro.
Its particular position has made it known for the variety of the flora. In fact, it conserves about a quarter of the plant species present in Italy. The fauna is varied and rich: chamois, eagles, deer, roe deer and black grouse populate the area. For several years the wolf has reappeared.
